Works of the Heart | TOAST

In early February, one of my favourite brands, TOAST invited me to visit my local store in Cambridge to photograph and take a closer look at their new window display. Installed in the Cambridge store window is the beautiful artwork of Alice-Andrea Ewing (Alde & Ore, 2016); two bronze river maps that represent the landscape of her childhood.

“Alde & Ore are maps of Suffolk rivers – the landscape of Ewing’s childhood – but informed by rebbilibs, the navigational charts of the Marshall Islanders. These sea charts were traditionally created from coconut fronds and served as informal memory aids, only interpretable by the maker. Ewing’s ‘river maps’ are made from bronze, using the ancient method of lost wax casting.”

These window displays have been created for  TOAST’s ‘Works of the Heart’ campaign, a concept behind the launch of their new Spring/Summer collection, which celebrates creative minds and explores their passions over time and across culture.

The Cambridge window display is just one of eleven wonderful art installations, showcased for the month of February. Read more about all the artists involved in the ‘Works of the Heart’ windows here and see the photographs that I and two other bloggers took for TOAST here.
